Sony reveals official PS5 specifications

Sony finally broke its long silence related to PS5today, revealing in a developer presentation conducted by Mark Cerny the console's main features and official specifications. We discover that the console will be capable of generating 10.3 TFLOP of power and will have a very fast internal SSD, in addition to other features. Read all the details below!

The ultra-high-speed SSD and PS5's integrated custom I/O system have been developed with the aim of removing some barriers to the game and in particular loading screens. Developers will be able to transfer streaming resources to PS5 games at a very high speed, so PS5 gaming experiences will be dynamic and seamless, with virtually instantaneous journeys even to vast gaming worlds. This increased speed will allow game developers to create larger, more detailed worlds without the old limitations, such as load times, and allow players to spend more time playing than they wait.

In addition, new features have been introduced for the PS5 custom GPU. The additional power of the GPU will allow for higher resolution in games, but the most important new feature for the graphical aspect of games is definitely ray tracing. Ray tracing simulates how light propagates in real life and how it bounces off various surfaces. Games that take advantage of this feature will render objects much more accurately and with higher realism. Water, glass, light refraction, a character's hair, and so on, will seem even more realistic.

PS5 will also allow games to offer an even deeper sense of engagement through 3D audio. Graphics are obviously critical to the gaming experience, but audio also plays a crucial role. Sony wanted to provide an immersive audio experience to all users, not just those who own high-end speaker systems. A custom 3D audio engine has been designed and built with power and efficiency to ensure ideal audio rendering. With 3D audio on PS5, the sounds you listen to during playback will give you a greater sense of presence and position. You'll hear raindrops impacting on different surfaces around you, and you'll be able to pinpoint exactly where the enemy behind you is.

Finally, the backward compatibility features have been confirmed: almost all PS4 titles will be playable on PS5 at launch. More than 4000 games have been released on PS4, and Sony will continue to test and expand backward compatibility to more and more titles over time.
