PS5: First update introduces usb game storage

Sony announced today that tomorrow, April 14,will come the first major update of PS5,which will introduce a much-awaited feature: the ability to store games on an external USB disk. Titles require the power of the console SSD to spin, so external disks can only be used as storage, but this will allow us to alleviate the console's internal space issues.

If there is a title that you will no longer use for a period but do not want to uninstall it, you can now move it to a USB disk, and while it is there the console will continue to apply updates to it; when you want to go back to playing it, just move it back into the internal memory.

But that's not all: the incoming update also introduces other news. Here you are!

Expanding and managing PS5 storage memory

  • Save PS5 games to compatible external USB drives.* With this feature, you can now transfer PS5 games from internal console storage to USB extended storage. It's the perfect way to extend the storage capacity of your PS5 console, and when you're ready to play, you can copy your PS5 games back into the console's internal storage. It is faster to reinstall PS5 games from USB extended storage memory than to download them again or copy them from a disk.
  • Because the PS5 SSD allows games to load ultra quickly, PS5 titles cannot be played directly from USB extended storage. PS5 games cannot be downloaded directly to USB extended storage. However, games transferred or copied back to internal storage will be automatically updated, when applicable. In addition, you can choose the game modes you want to install (for example, campaign or multiplayer) for the selected titles that support the option.

New social features for PS4 and PS5 consoles

  • Share Play cross-Jan. PS4 and PS5 players can now use Share Play while chatting at parties. This means that PS5 console users can allow their friends on PS4 consoles to view their game screen or even try PS5 games via Share Play and vice versa. Options include the ability to share your screen with a friend and virtually give up your controller, or a secondary one, to a friend and play cooperative games together.
  • Request to participate in game sessions. A selection of your friends' in-game sessions will now appear on both PS4 and PS5 consoles, so you can play more with friends. In addition, you can use this feature as a shortcut to send an invitation to play, reducing the time it takes to start playing with friends. Through the Privacy Settings menu, you can change who can interact with you in parties, games, and messages.

Ps5 console-optimized customization and control options

  • Improved game base. The Game Base menu has been improved to allow faster access to important content and features. Now you can easily switch from Parties to Friends and start chatting with your existing parties or view individual activities of your friends online. In addition, you can turn notifications on or off for each of the parties you join.
  • Turn off in-game chat or adjust player volume. You can now quickly turn off the in-game chat, so you can mute your microphone and other players' voice. In addition, you can easily adjust the volume of other players' individual voice chat in the same chat, so you won't have to ask your friends each time to turn down or turn up the microphone volume.
  • Pre-download game updates. When activated by developers, game updates will be pre-downloaded to your console if the "automatic updates" setting is on and the console is on or in rest mode. This way you can start playing the latest version of a title right after the update is published.
  • Customize the game collection. With the ability to search your library or hide games, it's now easier to find content and customize the view of your game collection.
  • The screen zoom. You can now adjust the screen magnification according to your preferences from the Settings menu.
  • New settings and trophy statistics screen. You can now customize the trophy layer for automatic capture of a screen snapshot or video clip, so you can choose to capture and save only images or videos of moments when you win higher-grade trophies, such as Gold or Platinum. We're also introducing a new player trophy stats screen, where you can see a summary of your trophy level and status at a glance.
