Sony hasn't officially commented on the problem but waiting for an update that fixes the bug, you can prevent this by setting the Privacy of Private messages.

Here's how: go into Settings > Personal Settings > Privacy settings > Account Management/Messaging and from there select Only Friends (if you trust the people you have on your friends list) or None (size recommended, especially if you have many friends on PSN).
