CDPR: The Witcher IV tech demo is not the real gameplay
In a statement released shortly after the event, CDPR confirmed that what we saw was not The Witcher IV, but a demo built using the technology behind the new chapter of the saga. This means that the stunning visual quality and effects shown in the demo should not be taken as a direct reference to what we will see in the final game.
The most attentive fans immediately pointed out how CD Projekt RED has already shown spectacular material in the past and then presented products at launch that did not fully correspond to what was revealed. It happened with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (2015) and with Cyberpunk 2077 (2020). The studio therefore wanted to be very clear this time, stating to the VGC website: "This is a tech demo, and a first look at the cutting-edge technology that powers The Witcher IV – but not The Witcher IV itself".
The studio then added: "It shows the powerful foundation we are building in close collaboration with Epic Games to push open world design further than ever before and the core systems and features we are developing using Unreal Engine 5. We're really proud of this first milestone and excited to give you a taste of some of the fantastic technologies like UAF, Nanite Foliage, Smart Objects, ML Deformer, and FastGeo Streaming that are helping shape the future of The Witcher."
Essentially, what we witnessed was a showcase of what could be possible with the development of The Witcher IV, but the entire sequence was pre-calculated and graphically rendered at its best for the benefit of the presentation.
